Ο Μανώλης Κονταρός γεννήθηκε στις 14 Ιουνίου 1968 στις Βρύσες, χωριό Επαρχίας Αποκορώνου στον Νομό Χανίων της Κρήτης. Είναι γιος του Ιωάννη Κονταράκη με καταγωγή από τον Tζιτζιφέ Αποκορώνου και της Aννας, το γένος Μακρυδάκη από το Φρε ίδιας επαρχίας. Έχει τρεις αδερφές, τη Μαρία, τη Γεωργία και τη Ζαχαρένια. Παντρεύτηκε το 1998 την Αθηνά Μαυριδάκη και έχει αποκτήσει τέσσερα παιδιά το Γιάννη, την Aννα, τον Ιάκωβο και την Ελένη. Ζει με την οικογένειά του στο Ρέθυμνο.
Ξεκίνησε να ασχολείται με τη μουσική σε ηλικία 16 χρόνων. Αρχικά γράφτηκε στη σχολή μουσικών του Ross Daily στα Χανιά, όπου και πήρε τα πρώτα του μαθήματα για το λαούτο. Επιπλέον ασχολήθηκε από μικρός και με το χορό ως πρωτοχορευτής στον καλλιτεχνικό όμιλο Αποκορώνου. Με πρότυπα του το Νίκο Μανιά και το Μανώλη Κακλή ξεκινάει την επαγγελματική του δραστηριότητα βασιζόμενη στο τραγούδι.
Από την οικογένειά του δεν ασχολείται κανείς με μουσικά όργανα, αλλά προέρχεται από βαθιές παραδοσιακές ρίζες όσον αφορά στην κρητική φιλοξενία και στο τραγούδι. Ο πατέρας του, ο Κονταρογιάννης, είναι γνώστης και ερμηνευτής του ριζίτικου τραγουδιού. Το ερέθισμα να ασχοληθεί με τη μουσική προήλθε από τις παρέες που γίνονταν τακτικά στο σπίτι τους.
Σταθμός στην καριέρα του ήταν ο μόνιμος του συνεργάτης επί 18 συναπτά έτη, ο δεξιοτέχνης της λύρας Γεώργιος Τσουρουπάκης με τον οποίο ηχογράφησαν πολλές δισκογραφικές δουλειές. Ο Γιώργος έφυγε άδικα και ξαφνικά από τη ζωή το 2008 σκορπώντας θλίψη σε όλους τους λάτρεις του δεξιοτεχνικού παιξίματος του.
Ο Μανώλης Κονταρός έχει εμφανιστεί σε εκδηλώσεις σε ολόκληρη την Κρήτη, σε πολλές περιοχές της Ελλάδας καθώς και στο εξωτερικό. Ο Μανώλης Κονταρός ταξιδεύει τους μουσικόφιλους στο κρητικά παραδοσιακά τραγούδια, στη μαγεία του ριζίτικου και στα μεθυστικά μονοπάτια του δημοτικού μας τραγουδιού.
Manolis Kontaros was born on June 14, 1968, in Vryses, a village in the Apokoronas district of Chania, Crete. He is the son of Ioannis Kontarakis, whose family originates from Tzitzifes in Apokoronas, and Anna (née Makrydaki), who comes from Fres, another village in the same district. He has three sisters: Maria, Georgia, and Zacharenia. In 1998, he married Athina Mavridaki, and together they have four children: Giannis, Anna, Iakovos, and Eleni. He lives with his family in Rethymno, Crete.
Manolis Kontaros began his musical journey at the age of sixteen. He initially enrolled at Ross Daly’s School of Music in Chania, where he received his first lessons on the Cretan lute (laouto). From an early age, he was also deeply involved in traditional dance, performing as the lead dancer for the Apokoronas Cultural Association. Inspired by Nikos Mania and Manolis Kaklis, he launched his professional career as a singer, dedicating himself to the rich tradition of Cretan folk music.
Although no one else in his immediate family played a musical instrument, he grew up in a household deeply rooted in Cretan traditions of hospitality and music. His father, known as Kontarogiannis, is a respected performer and connoisseur of rizitika, the traditional songs of western Crete. The musical gatherings regularly held in the family home played a decisive role in inspiring Manolis to pursue music.
A defining chapter in his career was his eighteen-year collaboration with the renowned lyra virtuoso Georgios Tsouroupakis. Together they recorded numerous albums that became landmarks of the Cretan music scene. Tsouroupakis passed away unexpectedly in 2008, leaving behind a profound sense of loss among admirers of his extraordinary musicianship.
Throughout his career, Manolis Kontaros has performed at countless festivals and cultural events across Crete, throughout Greece, and internationally. Through his music, he introduces audiences to the authentic sounds of Cretan traditional music, the timeless beauty of rizitika songs, and the captivating spirit of Greek folk music. He continues to compose and record new material, preserving and promoting Crete’s rich musical heritage for future generations.
